Sowore Rejects Tinubu's Extension of Customs Chief's Tenure

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, publicly condemned President Bola Tinubu's decision to extend the tenure of Adewale Adeniyi as Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service by six months. Sowore expressed his displeasure through a statement, arguing that extending the tenure of public officials past their retirement age damages the internal structure and motivation within civil service organizations.

He emphasized that the extension, which was granted on a Friday, shifts Adeniyi's leadership end date to February 2027, despite having been due for retirement nearly two years ago. Sowore criticized the decision as morally wrong and detrimental to professional integrity, asserting that it sends a negative message about the application of rules and the influence of political favoritism.

The extension was announced by Bayo Onanuga, a special adviser to the president, who stated that it aims to ensure the completion of key trade initiatives and the smooth transition of leadership within the Nigeria Customs Service.
