Abbas Discusses Electoral Act 2026 and Voting Challenges

Speaker Abbas addressed the inclusion of electronic and manual transmissions in the Electoral Act 2026 during a meeting with Spanish Ambassador Felix Costal in Abuja. He highlighted that Nigeria's inadequate internet penetration could hinder the effectiveness of electronic result transmission, potentially disenfranchising voters.

Abbas noted that approximately 40% of Nigeria lacks adequate internet coverage, which could lead to a significant drop in voter participation. He stated that while there is a push for electronic transmission, the reality of internet service stability, even in advanced cities like Abuja, remains a concern.

Abbas assured that the hybrid system of combining manual and electronic methods is a feasible approach to ensure transparency in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The discussion also aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Spain, particularly in legislative diplomacy.
