SSANU Protests Delayed Salaries for Federal University Workers

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has raised alarms regarding the delayed payment of February 2026 salaries for federal university workers, stating that this situation has created significant financial strain on employees and their families across Nigeria. In a statement issued by the national president, Mohammed Ibrahim, on Thursday, the union emphasized that the delay is eroding staff morale and affecting overall productivity within institutions.

SSANU attributed the delays to inconsistencies in the government's salary payment system, particularly highlighting issues with the GIFMIS remita platform. The union has urged the federal government to adopt a more reliable salary payment system and expressed concerns over the slow pace of ongoing renegotiations with the federal government, particularly regarding non-teaching staff unions.

SSANU criticized recent public comments from the Minister of Education, suggesting that they misrepresent the current state of negotiations. The union believes that a stable university system in Nigeria depends on effective dialogue and the timely implementation of agreements.
