KASU ASUU Issues Ultimatum Over Staff Welfare Issues

The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by chairman Abubakar Abdullahi, issued a two-week ultimatum to the university authorities to address grievances stemming from the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement with the federal government, which became operational in January 2026. Abdullahi noted that deteriorating conditions of service had resulted in the exit of about 200 experienced academic staff.

In response, KASU Vice Chancellor Abdullahi Musa rejected the claims, attributing staff movements to routine resignations and retirements. However, he acknowledged unresolved staff welfare issues and stated that the administration of Governor Uba Sani had allocated over N800 million for staff welfare in the past three years, alongside additional funding for essential operations and accreditation.

Despite some government efforts, ASUU insists that significant issues remain, including lack of university autonomy and promotion arrears. Critics highlight gaps in the implementation of educational funding in Kaduna, despite the state allocating 25% of its budget to education.
