Stakeholders Critique FG's Plan to Recall Retired Teachers

Stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the Federal Government's plan to recall retired teachers as part of efforts to address Nigeria's worsening teacher shortage, which is estimated at 194,876 in public primary schools. The initiative, part of the National Teacher Policy (NTP) framework unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Education, aims to strengthen teacher preparation and recruitment.

Critics, including Temitop Peter, Chief Executive Officer of the Board Tutor, and Adeyinka Adetunji from the British International School, argue that while the idea may seem practical, it may not effectively address the realities of modern classrooms. They emphasize the need for systemic reforms to attract younger talent and improve teacher retention.

The plan includes temporary engagement of retired teachers to fill staffing gaps, particularly in underserved areas, but concerns about their adaptability to contemporary educational demands, such as digital learning, have been raised. The situation highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.
