Nigeria's Table Tennis Faces Growth Challenges

Stakeholders in Nigeria's table tennis community have raised concerns regarding the sport's growth and the challenges that limit players' performances in international competitions. This comes after the Nigerian men's and women's teams failed to advance beyond the preliminary group stage at the 2026 International Table Tennis Federation World Championship in London.

The men's team, led by Quadri Aruna, managed a win against Saudi Arabia but was eliminated by Egypt, while the women's team lost matches against Wales, Australia, and Uzbekistan. Adetayo Soji, President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, praised the resilience of the Nigerian contingent but noted the significant economic factors affecting the sport.

Wahid Oshodi, Executive Vice President of the International Table Tennis Federation Africa, emphasized the need for more support to develop players. Kweku Tandoh, Chief Operating Officer of the Africa Table Tennis Federation, pointed out the lack of attention to coaching education as a barrier to transitioning players from amateur to elite levels.

Plans for a training camp ahead of the African Youth Championship in Ghana were also mentioned.
