Stakeholders Review Kano's Sanitation Roadmap for 2026-2031

Stakeholders met at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano to review the state's existing Open Defecation Free (ODF) roadmap, aimed at developing sustainable basic sanitation access from 2026 to 2031. The meeting highlighted that sanitation remains a significant public health concern, citing issues such as contaminated water sources, inadequate toilet infrastructure, and poor hygiene education.

The Kano State Task Group WASH, along with development partners, called for urgent coordinated action to strengthen sanitation delivery across the state's 44 local government areas, which have yet to achieve ODF status. Key challenges identified included inadequate funding for sanitation programs, limited private sector participation, insufficient data for planning and monitoring, and a lack of inclusive sanitation technologies for vulnerable groups, including women, children, and persons with disabilities.

The stakeholders reached a consensus on prioritizing market-based sanitation, climate-resilient approaches, gender equity, and social inclusion to address these gaps.
