Opeyemi Bamidele Announces State Police Approval Progress

The National Assembly has initiated the collation of reports from state Houses of Assembly concerning the proposed establishment of state police, following the approval of the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill, 2026, by at least 30 states. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed this information during a lecture at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Plateau State.
He noted that the approval from 30 state legislatures exceeds the constitutional requirement of two-thirds of the 36 state Houses of Assembly as stipulated in Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution. The National Assembly will now consider the reports from the state legislatures and aims to pass a resolution by a simple majority in both chambers.
Following this, the bill will be sent to President Bola Tinubu for assent. Bamidele indicated that the legislative processes are expected to be completed by December 2026, marking a significant step in restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture.
