National Assembly Secures 28 Approvals for State Police Bill

The National Assembly has confirmed that 28 State Houses of Assembly have approved the proposed establishment of state police, surpassing the required threshold of 24 states. Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly, announced this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
The proposed legislation, known as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, aims to amend the Constitution to allow for State Police Services. The bill was sent to the 36 State Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, with a request for feedback within 30 days.
The deadline for responses was October 15, but the National Assembly will continue to receive reports until the bill is transmitted for presidential assent. Ogunlana verified the approvals and clarified that Section 9 of the Constitution does not require a third reading for a Constitution Alteration Bill.
The National Assembly is now initiating the necessary processes to send the bill to President Tinubu for assent, in line with the Acts Authentication Act, CAP A2, (LFN) 2004.
