Tinubu's State Police Initiative Aims to Combat Insecurity

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's initiative to establish state police is a strategic move to combat insecurity in Nigeria. Speaking on Radio Nigeria's Hausa live program, he explained that the proposal has undergone extensive legislative scrutiny, including public hearings across six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture and includes multiple safeguards to prevent the misuse of state police powers. Barau emphasized that the state police would complement, not replace, the Nigeria Police Force, enhancing grassroots security by recruiting local officers familiar with their communities.

He addressed concerns regarding potential abuse of power and assured that the framework would provide legal protections and checks against intimidation. The Deputy Senate President expressed confidence in the support of state houses of assembly for the constitutional amendment necessary for this reform, urging Nigerians to embrace the initiative as a crucial step towards lasting peace and security.
