Presidential Working Group Finalizes Policing Bill Report

The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill is set to finalize its report for submission to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today, concluding a seven-week assignment focused on the establishment of State Police. Chaired by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Group has completed initial policy and legislative drafting stages.

The deadline for submissions of memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill is today, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. The drafting process is underway, following guidance from the Policy Advisory Committee, chaired by retired Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Liman.

Legal drafters from the Federal Ministry of Justice are also involved in developing the legislation. The consultation process has gathered input from various stakeholders, including government institutions and civil society organizations, which will inform the final legislative proposal.

The Group aims to provide a framework for a dual policing structure, including Federal and State Police Services, with necessary safeguards and accountability mechanisms.
