Shari’ah Council Warns Against Hasty State Police Amendment

The Shari’ah Council of Nigeria, through its Secretary General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, issued a statement on Sunday warning against a rushed constitutional amendment concerning state police. The council highlighted the severe security crisis in Nigeria, with thousands killed and millions displaced.

It argued that state police should not be viewed as a quick solution to security issues, as the current security challenges stem from inadequate funding, corruption, and poor coordination among agencies. The council urged the government to focus on reforming existing security institutions, enhancing funding, and improving personnel welfare and technology.

It expressed concern over the National Assembly's handling of the amendment process, calling for broader national consultations and transparency. The council warned against potential misuse of state police for political intimidation, advocating for constitutional safeguards and independent oversight before any establishment of state police.

It called on President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders to address public concerns before proceeding with the amendment.
