Army Commander Urges Enhanced Operations Against Bandits

Colonel Joseph Umaru, the Acting Commander of the 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, conducted a familiarisation tour of units in Kebbi State from September 8-9, 2026. He urged commanders and troops to intensify intelligence-led operations to restrict the activities of bandits and criminal elements.

The tour included visits to the 223 Light Tank Battalion in Zuru, COAS Intervention Battalion (CIB) III in Sakaba, and 1 Battalion in Birnin Kebbi. Umaru aimed to gain insights into the operational environment, assess troop readiness and welfare, and enhance command effectiveness in combating insecurity.

During his visit to the 223 Light Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel SS Dadirep briefed him on the security situation and challenges faced by the unit. Umaru stressed the importance of troop welfare and motivation for mission success and directed Commanding Officers to adopt the Chief of Army Staff’s “Soldiers First” mantra.

He emphasized the need for enhanced intelligence gathering and cooperation with other security agencies to ensure effective operations against bandits.
