Doctors Suspended Over Chimamanda Adichie's Son's Death

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has suspended three doctors—Dr. Tund Majekodunmi, Dr.

Titu Ogundar, and Dr. Atinuk Uwajeh—following a panel's finding of medical negligence in the treatment of Nkanu Eseg, the 21-month-old son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband Ivara Eseg.

The incident occurred on January 7, 2026, when Nkanu was taken to Euracar Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and developed serious complications, including cardiac arrest, allegedly due to improper monitoring during sedation. The doctors have accused the panel of misapplying medical ethics codes and not allowing a fair hearing, claiming they were not given the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses.

They demand that the panel's decision be set aside and a public apology issued, arguing that the process has irreparably damaged their professional reputations. The case will be determined by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
