British Airways Passengers Protest After Flight Diversion

Passengers aboard a British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Lagos experienced significant distress after their flight was diverted to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja due to a fire incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The airline acknowledged that the diversion was beyond their control but faced criticism for their handling of passenger welfare.

Upon arrival in Abuja at 5:30 PM, passengers were left without adequate arrangements for their welfare, relying on a third-party agent who provided insufficient hospitality. Transport to hotels was delayed, with two coaster buses and a minibus provided for 219 passengers, resulting in further delays.

Many passengers were unable to check into hotels until late at night, leading to hours of waiting. The situation escalated the following morning when passengers returned to the airport seeking clarification about their luggage and onward travel.

At 1 AM, the airline reportedly informed them that the flight was terminated, advising passengers to make their own arrangements back to Lagos, which led to protests demanding accountability from British Airways, who had yet to issue an official statement at press time.
