ASUU Threatens Strike Resumption Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued an ultimatum to the federal and state governments, threatening to resume its suspended nationwide strike if unresolved demands affecting university lecturers are not addressed. ASUU president Christopher Piwuna made this announcement after an emergency session of the union's National Executive Council at the University of Abuja.

The union's grievances center on the partial implementation of a December 2025 agreement, which followed over eight years of negotiations with the federal government. While some states, including Abia, Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina, and Borno, have begun implementing the agreement, ASUU warned that remaining states must act quickly to avoid a significant industrial crisis.

The union also highlighted that the Tinubu administration has paid four of the 7.5 months of withheld salaries from the Buhari era but called for the immediate release of the outstanding 3.5 months. Additionally, ASUU reported unremitted pension contributions and cooperative deductions, which pose a risk to industrial peace.
