Supreme Court Upholds Action Peoples Party's Registration

The Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed an appeal aimed at deregistering the Action Peoples Party (APP), affirming the party's constitutional status and its eligibility to participate in the 2027 general elections. The appeal was filed by Bless Elujiuba, following earlier rulings by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had upheld APP's legal recognition as a political party.

The Supreme Court's five-member panel, led by Justice John Inyang Okoro, noted that the appeal was formally withdrawn without objection, leading to its dismissal. The Court of Appeal had previously found that APP met the necessary constitutional requirements to remain registered, dismissing claims that the party failed to meet conditions stipulated in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution.

The ruling emphasized that the party had presented credible evidence of electoral victories, including a councillorship seat in Jigawa State and significant wins in local government elections in River State.
