Police Officer Arrested for Alleged Extrajudicial Killing

On April 26, 2026, ASP Usman of the Delta Police Command was involved in an incident where he allegedly opened fire and killed a suspect during an operation. The event was captured on video, showing the officer evacuating the body in a police Hilux van.

Following the incident, the Delta Police Command, represented by Bright Edaf, issued a statement on Tuesday, condemning the extrajudicial killing. The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, confirmed that ASP Usman was arrested while attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Oyeniyi noted that the officer violated Force Order 237, which outlines standard operating procedures for discharging firearms. As a result, ASP Usman will be transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja to face a disciplinary committee, with immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution anticipated.

Oyeniyi reaffirmed the command's zero tolerance for unlawful and reckless conduct by officers and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
