Suspected Hantavirus Patient Tests Negative, Released

A suspected hantavirus patient has tested negative and was discharged from the biocontainment unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This patient was one of 18 individuals under medical observation after being evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondiu, which is linked to an ongoing hantavirus outbreak.

David Fitter, a representative from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stated that initial test results were inconclusive, but subsequent tests confirmed the negative result. Kayla Thoma, a spokesperson for the hospital, indicated that the patient was medically cleared for transfer from the national quarantine unit but will continue to be monitored.

Additionally, 15 asymptomatic individuals remain quarantined at the Nebraska facility. Another mildly symptomatic patient at Emory Hospital in Georgia also tested negative for the virus.

Health officials have reiterated that the overall risk to the public remains low despite the outbreak, which has recorded three confirmed cases of the rare hantavirus disease.
