SWAN Commends NSC for Rewarding Commonwealth Games Athletes

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) issued a statement on Sunday, commending the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its prompt and transparent disbursement of cash rewards to Team Nigeria athletes who won medals at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The statement, attributed to Secretary General Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo on behalf of SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, praised NSC Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for implementing a transparent reward system.

This system allows immediate financial rewards to be presented at the competition venue, with the remaining balance deposited into athletes' bank accounts. SWAN noted that this initiative marks a significant improvement over previous practices, enhancing athlete welfare and motivation.

The association also applauded the NSC's decision to increase financial rewards for medal-winning athletes and their coaches, highlighting the importance of recognizing teamwork in sports. SWAN expressed confidence that these measures would inspire greater commitment among athletes and encourage future generations to pursue excellence in sports.
