SWDC to Launch ₦80bn Rural Transformation Program

The Southwest Development Commission (SWDC) is set to launch an ₦80 billion rural transformation initiative known as TransCom in Ibadan, scheduled for May 5-6, 2026. This program aims to enhance rural livelihoods and boost employment by developing 137 self-sustaining community economies across six states in the southwest zone.

The summit will gather government officials, development finance institutions, and private sector leaders, marking a critical stage in the program's rollout. SWDC Chairman Olubunmi Adetunmbi described the initiative as a significant step towards unlocking the economic potential of rural communities in southwest Nigeria.

The TransCom model will integrate three to five neighboring villages, typically with populations ranging from 2,000 to 8,000, into a single economic unit. The program is designed to address long-standing structural challenges in rural economies, particularly the lack of critical infrastructure necessary to scale agricultural production, including storage facilities, reliable electricity, and healthcare services.
