SWDC Launches ₦80bn Rural Transformation Initiative

The Southwest Development Commission (SWDC) is set to unveil an ₦80 billion rural transformation initiative, targeting the Southwest region of Nigeria. This announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday.

The initiative, known as the Transcom Initiative, aims to improve rural livelihoods and boost employment by developing 137 self-sustaining community economies across six states. A high-level meeting is scheduled for May 5-6 in Ibadan, where top government officials, development finance institutions, and private sector leaders will convene.

The initiative will integrate clusters of three to five neighboring villages, typically with populations ranging from 2,000 to 8,000, into a single economic unit. It will operate across seven pillars, including agriculture, agro-processing, energy, digital connectivity, healthcare, microfinance, and social protection.

Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi, SWDC chairman, described the initiative as a significant step toward unlocking the rural economic potential of Southwest Nigeria. The program is expected to address long-standing structural challenges, particularly the lack of critical infrastructure.
