Bokoru Defends Sylva Against Coup Allegations in Media

Julius Bokoru, the Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to Chief Timipre Sylva, former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, issued a statement addressing media reports that allegedly link Sylva to a coup plot. Bokoru questioned the sourcing and presentation of these allegations, suggesting that they could unduly influence public perception before due process is followed.

He noted that he had not been able to contact Sylva since the controversy arose but emphasized that his comments were not meant to undermine investigative journalism. Bokoru criticized the manner in which some media organizations, particularly Premium Times, have reported the allegations, stating that they have been "serialised, repackaged and amplified" to reinforce a specific narrative.

He called for a clear distinction between allegations and established facts, urging authorities to present any evidence against Sylva through legal channels. Bokoru advocated for media independence and responsible reporting, stating that repeated publication of unverified claims could lead to a trial by public opinion rather than through formal legal proceedings.
