Tambuwal Accuses Tinubu of Abacha-Style Politics

Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, has accused President Bola Tinubu of utilizing political strategies akin to those of late General Sani Abacha to silence opposition parties in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a press conference regarding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) state congress in Sokoto, Tambuwal claimed that Tinubu's approach aims to ensure that no opposition party remains stable. He highlighted internal crises within rival parties, suggesting that these are deliberately fueled to favor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Tambuwal warned against a return to a political landscape dominated by a single party, referencing the controversial transition program during Abacha's regime, which saw political parties unanimously endorsing a singular rule. He expressed concern that this trend could weaken broader opposition coalitions, including the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, ultimately threatening Nigeria's multi-party democracy. Tambuwal also criticized the current administration for exacerbating the country's socio-economic conditions, citing ongoing insecurity, rising poverty, and unemployment.
