Taraba State Government Denies N1.2 Trillion Debt Claim

The Taraba State Government has refuted claims that its debt portfolio has escalated to N1.2 trillion. During a press briefing in Jalingo, Dr Sarah Adi Enoch, the State's Commissioner of Finance, clarified that the officially recognized domestic debt stands at N85.51 billion as of December 31, 2025.

This figure reflects a decrease of approximately N2.45 billion from the previous debt of about N87.96 billion before Governor Agbu Kefas took office. Dr Enoch explained that the Debt Management Office (DMO) had indicated that the debt figures published in March 2023 were based on data from September 30, 2022.

She emphasized that the DMO's latest data confirms the domestic debt figure of N85.51 billion and categorically dismissed the N1.2 trillion claim as false and misleading. Additionally, she reported that Taraba's external debt was approximately $46.47 million as of December 31, 2022, slightly decreasing to $48.04 million by December 31, 2025, while acknowledging the risks associated with foreign currency obligations.
