Taraba State Government Denies N1.3 Trillion Debt Claim

The Taraba State Government, through its Commissioner for Finance, Sarah Adi, has contested allegations that the state's debt profile stands at N1.3 trillion. During a statement in Jalingo, Adi clarified that discussions regarding the state's finances should differentiate between existing debt stock, approved credit facilities, outstanding balances, and unutilized financing arrangements.

According to the latest data from the Debt Management Office (DMO), Taraba's domestic debt was reported at N85.51 billion as of December 31, 2025, reflecting a decrease of about N2.45 billion from N87.96 billion prior to Governor Agbu Kefas's tenure. Adi also noted that the DMO's publication from March 2023 represented the state's debt position as of September 30, 2022.

On external debt, she indicated an increase from approximately $46.47 million as of December 31, 2022, to about $48.04 million as of December 31, 2025, describing this increase as modest while acknowledging foreign exchange impacts.
