Joint Tax Board Clarifies Tax ID Requirement for Bank Accounts

The Joint Tax Board clarified that Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) are not mandatory for bank accounts yet, despite concerns after the signing of new Tax Acts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Reports misinterpreted the new Tax Administration Act, suggesting compulsory TINs for banking operations.

The JTB emphasized that the tax reforms aim to simplify compliance and reduce multiple taxation, exempting vulnerable individuals and small businesses from certain tax obligations. They assured Nigerians that the new tax system would generate TINs automatically using NINs or CAC registration numbers, preventing anyone from being locked out of financial services due to the reforms.
