Nigerians Abroad Not Obligated to Obtain Tax ID Number, Clarifies Taiwo Oyedele

Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy Tax Reform, addressed concerns regarding the impact of the new tax reform law on Nigerians living abroad. He clarified that Nigerians abroad are not obligated to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN) unless they earn income from Nigerian sources through employment or business operations within the country.

The new law aims to make compliance easier, especially through online platforms like TaxPromax. Oyedele emphasized that income earned outside Nigeria and remitted back home will not be taxed again, with provisions in place to prevent double taxation.

He also outlined guidelines for determining tax residency for non-resident Nigerians.
