Tax Ombud Advocates for Revenue Agency Collaboration

John Nwabuez, the Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud, pledged to work with tax revenue authorities at both national and subnational levels to enhance operational efficiency. This commitment was made during the 159th meeting of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) held in Lagos.

The JRB comprises the revenue board of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, along with revenue services and tax revenue generating agencies. Nwabuez discussed the role of the Tax Ombud in facilitating dispute resolution and strengthening trust in the tax system amid emerging tax reforms.

He described the office as an independent and impartial body that protects taxpayer rights and promotes administrative justice within the tax revenue framework. The office aims to bridge the gap between taxpayers and revenue authorities, receiving complaints and facilitating resolutions through mediation.

Nwabuez highlighted the importance of fair and transparent tax administration and called for stronger collaboration among tax authorities to ensure compliance with new tax laws.
