Tax Ombud Nigeria Seeks IMF Support for Capacity Building

Dr. John Nwabueze, the Chief Executive Officer of Tax Ombud Nigeria, has called for strategic support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to strengthen the operational capacity and independence of Nigeria's newly established tax arbitration office.

This appeal was made during a high-level benchmark visit to the South African tax ombud in Pretoria, which is part of the IMF's global initiative to enhance tax administration systems through knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration. Nwabueze expressed appreciation for the IMF's promotion of international cooperation and acknowledged the South African tax ombud's hospitality and willingness to share insights and best practices.

He noted that the establishment of Nigeria's Tax Ombud is a significant policy milestone aimed at promoting fair and transparent tax administration under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The office's work is anchored on three core pillars: access, neutrality, and impact, addressing the complexities of Nigeria's fiscal environment and the breadth of tax-related complaints across various sectors, including oil and gas, manufacturing, telecommunications, and the digital economy.
