TCN Refutes PHEDC Claims, Confirms 8,700MW Capacity

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed claims made by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) regarding its transmission capacity. TCN clarified that its current transmission capacity is 8,700MW, which is an increase from the outdated figure of 7,300MW cited by PHEDC in a social media post published on April 2, 2026.

Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, confirmed this updated capacity, emphasizing that the daily power output on the national grid is determined by the combined generation capacity declared by generation companies (Gencos) and the demand from distribution companies (Discos). TCN also noted that there are penalties for entities that fail to meet their declared capacities.

The company urged distribution companies, including PHEDC, to verify their claims publicly. TCN highlighted recent operational milestones, including peak generation levels above 5,500MW and a maximum daily energy dispatch of 128,370.75MWh, marking significant achievements in Nigeria's power sector.
