TCN Denies Transmission Grid Constraints on Power Supply

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), led by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sule Abdulaziz, has rejected claims that the country's transmission network is a major obstacle to improving electricity supply. During a parliamentary stakeholder engagement summit on power sector reform, Abdulaziz stated that the current capacity of the national grid stands at 8,700 megawatts, which is significantly above the highest power ever delivered.
He emphasized that the total installed generation capacity in Nigeria is 13,625 megawatts, with the highest volume of electricity ever generated being 5,801.84 megawatts. TCN achieved a record transmission of 128,370.75 megawatt hours on March 4, 2025.
Abdulaziz noted that while Nigeria's installed generation capacity exceeds 13,000 megawatts, actual electricity dispatch remains lower due to challenges affecting the entire electricity value chain. TCN plans to commission 82 new power transformers nationwide by November 2025, adding approximately 8,500 MVA to the grid's capacity.
