Nigerian Sisters Create AI Mat to Reduce Food Loss

Zainab Nasirudeen Yakubu and her sister Nurudeen Yakubu have developed an AI-powered mat designed to combat significant post-harvest losses in Nigeria, which are estimated to be between 30 to 40 million metric tons, translating to an economic loss of approximately N3.5 trillion to N5 trillion. Their invention, named Guard Grain, aims to help farmers protect their crops from pests and rodents, thereby preserving the quality and nutrients of agricultural produce.

The sisters received the Youngest Founder of the Year award at the Tech Unit Africa awards, highlighting their innovative contribution to agriculture. Zainab emphasized the importance of perseverance and the potential of youth in innovation during her acceptance speech.

Despite their success, they face challenges in accessing funding, despite support from Vice President Kashim Shettima and various governmental agencies. Their startup, which has rapidly gained recognition, will allow them to showcase their product to investors in San Francisco as part of a competition.
