Medvedev Calls for ATP Ranking System Reform

Daniil Medvedev, currently ranked world number 11, has advocated for a reconsideration of the ATP ranking system to ease the burden on players. He proposed streamlining the ATP calendar, suggesting that the number of tournaments contributing to rankings be reduced from 19 to 18 by 2026.

Medvedev highlighted the challenges faced by players, particularly with the demanding schedule that includes four Grand Slam and eight Masters 1000 events. He noted that smaller ATP 500 events should not count towards rankings, as they add pressure to players over an 11-month calendar.

Medvedev expressed concerns that the current system is financially unsustainable for players and that the ATP's licensing agreements may not be sufficient to support tournament operations. He mentioned that last year he played seven tournaments consecutively, which he found challenging.

ATP chief Andrea Gaudenzi has acknowledged the need for a revised schedule, emphasizing that players should have more choices regarding their participation in tournaments.
