Tension at Nyanya Polling Unit Over Alleged Vote Buying

On Saturday, at polling unit 035 in Nyanya, Abuja, tensions flared due to allegations of vote buying involving agents from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports indicated that APC intermediaries approached voters in the queue with cash offers, prompting protests from agents of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This confrontation led to a temporary disruption of the orderly voting process. Security personnel, including the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were deployed to restore calm.

The incident reflects ongoing concerns regarding electoral integrity in Nigeria, as civil society organizations and the Independent National Electoral Commission have repeatedly warned against practices that undermine free and fair elections. Allegations of financial inducements, including cash and food items, have been noted as recurring issues in Nigerian elections, exacerbated by poverty and unemployment.

Despite legal prohibitions against voter inducement, enforcement remains a challenge.
