Zulum Hosts Sahel Retreat on Counter-Terrorism Efforts

On a recent weekend, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Borno state governor, hosted a high-level retreat in Maiduguri, gathering representatives from Sahel countries and ambassadors to deliberate on strategies to combat terrorism, insurgency, and security challenges in the region. The event took place at the conference hall of the Musa Usman Secretariat and highlighted Maiduguri's emerging role as a center for regional counter-terrorism dialogue.

Governor Zulum emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to insecurity, advocating for a strategy that combines military action with non-kinetic interventions such as de-radicalization, reintegration, and humanitarian development. He stated that a purely military approach has been insufficient in addressing the issues of terrorism and displacement affecting the Sahel.

Additionally, Mr Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, called for enhanced regional cooperation to tackle the root causes of terrorism in the Sahel.
