Houston Rockets: A Legacy of NBA Championships

The Houston Rockets were founded in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets and joined the NBA as an expansion franchise. The team's name was chosen to reflect San Diego's aerospace industry.

After four seasons, the franchise relocated to Houston, Texas, in 1971, becoming the first NBA team in the state, influenced by the city's connection to space exploration and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

The Rockets initially faced challenges but gradually built a competitive roster featuring stars like Elvin Hayes and Calvin Murphy. The team's breakthrough came in the mid-1980s to early 1990s under Hakeem Olajuwon, who was drafted in 1984.

The Rockets reached the NBA Finals in 1986 and won back-to-back championships in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons, defeating the New York Knicks and Orlando Magic, respectively. Olajuwon earned Finals MVP honors, cementing his legacy.

The franchise has remained competitive, featuring stars like Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, and James Harden throughout its history.
