Nigeria Converts Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to University

President Bola Tinubu approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology in July 2026. This decision aligns with Nigeria's urgent need for expertise in mining, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and engineering.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa revealed that 199 universities received fewer than 100 applications through JAMB in the previous admission cycle, with 34 receiving none. The government recognized that merely increasing the number of institutions does not equate to expanding meaningful educational opportunities.

Nigeria currently has over 300 universities, yet faces a paradox of having insufficient tertiary capacity for its growing population while also having many poorly differentiated institutions competing for resources. The focus now is on whether creating or converting universities is the best approach to meet the country's educational needs.
