Koroma Acquitted of Charges Ahead of Sierra Leone Elections

Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the former President of Sierra Leone, faced allegations of a coup plot against the government of President Julius Maada Bio.

Following investigations that found no concrete evidence, he was granted bail to seek medical attention in Nigeria. Recently, the Office of Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice announced the termination of all criminal charges against him, citing health grounds as the rationale.

This decision, made under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, is significant as Sierra Leone approaches general elections in two years. Analysts view the initial accusations against Koroma as unfounded, and the government's gesture to bring him back could indicate a commitment to national cohesion and electoral integrity.

Koroma expressed gratitude to God, President Bio, and other key figures, including President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and ECOWAS leadership, emphasizing the importance of peace, justice, and reconciliation in Sierra Leone.
