Defence Minister Confirms Authenticity of Coup Plot

On September 4, 2023, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), Nigeria's Minister of Defence, confirmed the existence of an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, stating that the conspirators "truly wanted to do it." Musa indicated that only those identified as principal actors would face prosecution, while others might be released if investigations show they have no case to answer. He explained that security agencies are taking time to establish individual culpability, with the Department of State Services and the National Intelligence Agency involved in ongoing investigations.

Musa characterized the suspects as "a bunch of misguided individuals" and asserted that the plot was not merely theoretical but had genuine intent. He suggested that the motivations behind the plot were not primarily political ideology but rather nostalgia for past military regimes and the privileges associated with successful coups.

Musa himself was reportedly among the senior officials targeted by the conspirators, who had plans to arrest him during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff.
