Colonel Ma’aji Reveals Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji of the Nigerian Army disclosed grievances that allegedly motivated a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu's administration. He identified worsening insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship as key concerns discussed among those involved in the failed coup attempt.

Ma’aji stated that discussions about military intervention began in 2023, towards the end of former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, highlighting a deterioration in security and increased cases of kidnapping and banditry in northern Nigeria. He alleged that senior military authorities failed to respond adequately to the security crisis.

The plot was initially suspended due to insufficient funding and logistics, with Ma’aji claiming he financed part of it through personal resources. The plan was revived after he failed to secure promotion to brigadier general in 2024, although he maintained that this was not the main motivation.

Ma’aji cited dissatisfaction with economic policies and the handling of protests, emphasizing the frustration among young Nigerians. He is among the military officers facing trial over the alleged coup plot.
