Kalu Threatens APC Resignation Over Treatment of Bishops

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, stated that he would resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu disrespects Catholic bishops or opposition members. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu dismissed claims that Tinubu insulted the Catholic Church, asserting that the President maintains a cordial relationship with its leaders.

Kalu emphasized that Tinubu has consistently welcomed Catholic bishops for discussions, highlighting the church's role in addressing national issues. He noted that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has a long-standing tradition of commenting on the state of the nation.

The controversy arose after Cardinal John Onaiyekan, following a meeting with Tinubu and the bishops, expressed concerns about Nigeria's economic hardship and insecurity, to which some presidential aides responded critically. Kalu reiterated that the bishops should not be viewed as political adversaries for voicing their concerns.
