President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has pledged to eliminate poverty as a barrier to higher education, supported by a ₦1 trillion investment across Nigeria's universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education made over the past two years. Education Minister Dr.
Maruf Tunji Alausa made the declaration during engagement with educational stakeholders, assuring that no qualified student will be turned away because of financial constraints. The government's strategy centres on removing obstacles that have historically locked out talented Nigerians from pursuing tertiary qualifications.
The funds have been directed toward three core areas: expanding infrastructure across institutions, purchasing specialised training equipment and facilities, and creating contemporary learning spaces that improve the standard of teaching and research activities. According to the minister, these investments represent a deliberate shift in policy priority under the current administration.
By targeting the financial dimension of educational access, the government aims to broaden opportunity across all socioeconomic backgrounds and ensure that merit, rather than means, determines who pursues higher learning in Nigeria. The ₦1 trillion figure encompasses commitments made across the entire tertiary sector since the administration took office.
Officials have not yet provided a breakdown of how these funds have been distributed between universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, or detailed timelines for when additional infrastructure improvements will be completed.
