Tinubu Halts Retirement of 30 Senior Police Officers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly intervened to stop the planned compulsory retirement of 30 senior officers within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), including Deputy Inspector Generals and Assistant Inspector Generals. This decision follows the resignation of Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun.

Sources indicate that the president's intervention aims to prevent a mass retirement of senior officers, which traditionally occurs when a new Inspector General assumes office. The list of officers expected to retire includes at least eight Deputy Inspector Generals, such as Yahaya Abubakar and Adebola Hamzat.

The retirement was scheduled to take effect as part of a transition process, which typically triggers the exit of top-ranking officers to preserve command hierarchy. However, the president's intervention has sparked renewed debate over the legality of compulsory retirement practices within the police force.

Disu, who was appointed less than two months ago, is also affected by this decision, as he was set to retire on April 13, 2026, due to the amendment of the Police Act.
