Tinubu's Vacation Raises Security Concerns in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu announced a three-week annual vacation starting from August 30, with London, United Kingdom, as his first destination. During this period, Vice President Kashim Shettima is also outside Nigeria, attending the African Union leaders summit in Angola.

The absence of both leaders has prompted security expert Dr. Kabir Adamu, CEO of Beacon Security and Innovations Limited, to express concerns regarding leadership continuity and national security. He noted that while Nigeria's Constitution does not explicitly prohibit the simultaneous absence of the president and vice president, it raises questions about the government's ability to respond to emergencies.

Adamu emphasized the importance of uninterrupted decision-making during crises, such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks, and highlighted the lack of formal power transfer from Tinubu to Shettima during his foreign trips since May 2023. This practice contrasts with that of Tinubu's predecessor, who frequently delegated authority during extended absences.
