Tinubu Orders Reforms After NFF Resignations in Football

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated sweeping reforms in Nigerian football after a series of resignations at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) due to the failure of both senior national teams to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. On Thursday, Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy announced the directive following the resignations of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and other Executive Committee members.

The NFF confirmed these resignations, stating that Gusau's decision was meant to facilitate a comprehensive reform process to address deep-rooted governance and developmental issues within Nigerian football. Tinubu attributed the national teams' repeated failures to "structural weaknesses" in the system and emphasized the need for reforms in governance, administration, and accountability.

The immediate cause of the resignations was the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup, marking Nigeria's first absence from the tournament since its inception in 1991. The men's team has also failed to qualify for the last two World Cups.
