Tinubu Rebrands NYSC to National Development Scheme

On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu justified the decision to rebrand the 53-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a National Development Scheme. This reform, approved by the Federal Executive Council, aims to transform the NYSC into a platform for skill development and employment opportunities for Nigerian youth.

The initiative will feature a six-week orientation program focusing on civic responsibility, leadership values, and personal development, with a career readiness component in various sectors including agriculture, health, education, technology, law, public service, and the creative economy. The NYSC will now be led by a civilian Director-General supported by three executive directors, including one from the security services.

The program will prioritize indigenous graduates and utilize technology to align corps members' skills with their academic backgrounds. The reforms are part of Tinubu's administration's promise to create meaningful opportunities for young Nigerians, who represent nearly 70% of the population.
