Nigeria Declares Public Holidays for Eid ul-Fitr 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate Eid ul-Fitr, which signifies the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government.

A statement issued on Tuesday included warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim community for successfully completing Ramadan. The Minister emphasized the importance of sustaining virtues such as love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice during this festive period.

Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and to extend acts of kindness. Additionally, the Sultan of Sokoto, who is the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, called for the sighting of the new crescent moon, with March 18, 2026, being the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH.
