To Cut Costs, FG Launches N100bn Initiative to Power Public Institutions with Solar Energy

The Federal Government has launched a N100 billion initiative, the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), to power public institutions with solar energy. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Budget Office of the Federation and Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp) to mark the official launch in Abuja.

The initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of distributed solar energy solutions in public sector institutions such as schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices, reducing reliance on diesel and carbon footprint. The first phase of NPSSI is fully funded by the federal government, with subsequent phases leveraging private capital and international funders to eliminate sovereign guarantees.

The initiative was hailed as a model for future infrastructure financing in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of clean and sustainable energy solutions to drive economic growth and improve quality of life.
