Oxford English Dictionary Adds 29 Nigerian Words

The Oxford English Dictionary has officially included 29 Nigerian words in its latest update, highlighting the linguistic richness of Nigeria. Among the newly added terms are "tokunbo," which refers to imported used vehicles, "danfo," a yellow minibus used for public transport in Lagos, and "mama put," a term for roadside food vendors.

This update is a tribute to the late language activist Pa Bayo Oguntuna, who was instrumental in advocating for the recognition of Nigerian English. The inclusion of these words reflects the unique cultural expressions and everyday realities of Nigerians.

Other terms added include "buka," referring to roadside restaurants, and "chop," which has meanings related to eating and financial misconduct. The update signifies the growing acknowledgment of Nigerian English within global linguistic frameworks, showcasing the country's diverse vernacular and its impact on the English language.
